Manila, October 2016 – It has been a tradition for iVolunteer Philippines to conduct Volunteer Community Meetups. Community meetups aim to educate volunteers of existing volunteer programs and advocacies with other organizations.
iVolunteer Philippines’ last community meet up happened in October 15, 2016 at A-Space Greenbelt which focused on disaster preparedness. The organization partnered with A-Space and Volunteer in Asia for the event.
Invited were speakers who inspired the volunteers to take part in becoming a solution by sharing with them the current disaster challenges of the country and how they can participate individually.
It was joined by Ma. Elna Juguilon Jazmines, coordinator of Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC) and Luzon Coordinator of The Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management; Jose Mari R. Pineda, DRRM Specialist of USAID Be Secure Project for Water Safety and Security; and Jake Rom D. Cadag, a senior lecturer at the University of the Philippines whose specialties include disaster risk reduction and management and sustainable development; and 40 volunteers from different organizations.
Ms. Elna Jazmines discussed the basic roles of volunteers in disaster risk reduction and emphasized the roles in “Preparedness, Prevention and Mitigation”, that if done well, would lessen need for relief, rehabilitation, and recovery. Mr. Jom Pineda shared the advocacies of Center for Disaster Preparedness and how others can join. Jake Rom Cadag on the other hand, shared his insights on “When you realize that volunteerism is not just being a volunteer?” and lead a group activity.

The event gave volunteers the first step to disaster preparedness which is raising awareness.
iVolunteer Philippines is looking forward for continuous and new partnerships to spread the passion of volunteerism by connecting individuals, organizations, and advocacies together. The organization believes that together, we can definitely build a better Philippines.
