Annually, iVolunteer Philippines recognizes outstanding volunteers in the country through the iVolunteer Champion award, which is anchored in the organization’s five core values: Integrity, Inclusivity, Nationalism, Professionalism, and Change Leadership.

In 2024, Ryan Juntilla Madamba, 41, a father of two, a dedicated volunteer, and the School Head of Supon National High School in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur, was awarded the iVolunteer Champion for Professionalism.

The Beginning of Madamba’s Volunteering Journey

Madamba’s volunteering journey began when he assumed his role at Supon National High School in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur. When the school was newly established in 2018, resources were scarce and teaching staff was limited. This harsh reality led Ryan to take action. He initiated a program and partnered with BEAGIVER Ventures Inc., seeking donors to provide students with essential needs. His efforts paid off: they were able to provide school bags and raincoats to 150 students.

Staying in Motion Amidst the Challenges

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, Ryan saw and felt the urgent need to help his community during those trying times. Once again, he sought donors, similar to his previous initiative. With the funds he gathered, he purchased rice and vegetables from local farmers. His fellow teachers joined him in repacking the rice, vegetables, coffee, and sardines, which they distributed to residents throughout their communities.

Small Steps Continue to Have an Impact

The communities witnessed how Ryan and his helpers worked tirelessly, and that was how everything started to grow. Ryan had the fuel to stay in motion. He was able to collaborate with the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation, which provided additional support and funds for families in their barangay. To this day, Ryan remains actively involved with the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation’s projects, identifying beneficiaries in the community and assisting with the distribution of goods.

Ryan’s Definition of Volunteerism

When asked how he defines volunteerism, considering everything he has done for his community as a teacher who works even during holidays and as a volunteer, Ryan said that volunteerism is something that comes from within his heart. It is an act he does without expecting anything in return, as long as he knows he is helping other people.

iVolunteer Philippines Made a Mark in Ryan’s Life

Ryan shared that when he received the iVolunteer Award for Professionalism, he was extremely happy and surprised. He realized that finally, all his sacrifices were being recognized in a way they hadn’t been before, despite his hard work, effort, and immense service.

A State of Gratitude

Ryan expressed his deep gratitude to iVolunteer Philippines. Through the iVolunteer Champion Award, he was able to reach more people and raise awareness about what he has done and continues to do for his community through volunteering.

The Belief That Keeps Him Going

Ryan carries with him a simple yet profound belief: if a man has resources, he must share them with those in need. In this life, excessive wealth is not necessary. What truly matters is the positive mark a man can leave for those who come after him.

Ryan’s Inspiration

A high school friend serves as Ryan’s inspiration. He recalls that this friend grew up in a struggling family with nine siblings and limited financial means. Despite these challenges, his friend rose above them and is now successful and helping others. This reminds Ryan to keep going.

Truly, Ryan is an example that when an individual carries the value of professionalism within him, anything is possible despite the challenges.
